Sign the Petition to Oppose a Drive-Thru Restaurant in Hyattsville

We need your help in standing up to a powerful developer that wants to place a drive-thru restaurant in the parking lot of the Mall at Prince George’s, which is in clear violation of the zoning restrictions for the area. The developer has asked the County to approve an exception so they can add thousands of vehicles per month to the already congested East-West Highway, which would reduce pedestrian safety and would be inconsistent with Hyattsville’s character as a walkable, sustainable city.
We need your help in standing up to this developer by signing the petition opposing the drive-thru restaurant in Hyattsville. More background information is below, and you can sign the petition here: http://patrickpaschall.com/chick-fil-a_petition/.
A developer proposes to put a drive-thru Chick-Fil-A restaurant in the parking lot of the Mall at Prince George’s adjacent to East-West Highway, which would process 14,000 vehicles per month, adding significant road congestion to an already congested road.
The Transit District Overlay Zone (County zoning restrictions) bans drive-thru restaurants within 1/2 mile of the Prince George’s Plaza Metro Station in order to promote pedestrian safety and access. These restrictions mean that the proposed Chick-Fil-A restaurant can only be approved if the proposal for a drive-thru is removed from the application. The developer has requested that they be exempted from the drive-thru restriction, yet haven’t provided any real justification for exemption from the zoning restrictions.
The developer claims that the community supports the drive-thru restaurant because they have one letter of support for their proposal. Despite the fact that the City of Hyattsville, the Town of University Park, and the County Planning Board have recommended that the drive-thru be removed from the proposal, the County Council has ignored the recommendation of these jurisdictions in the past and may do so again unless we make our voice heard.
We need to make sure our voice is heard and that we tell our County Council members that the community opposes adding thousands of cars to our roadways each week and reducing pedestrian safety.
The Planning Board is scheduled to hold a hearing and accept public testimony on July 17, 2014, at 10am. The hearing will be held in the First Floor County Council Hearing Room of the County Administration Building, 14741 Governor Oden Bowie Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772. I plan to attend the meeting, testify, and present these petitions, and I encourage everyone to join me at the Planning Board hearing. I’ll send out updated information when the details are finalized.
